Re: Barack Obama, next president of the U.S.?
I've been invited to attend a parade today, to participate in a parade I should say---a Foreign Legion affair, unutterably boring but the food is good, oats and barley and the little kids give me tons of sweets, and it is something to do, it gets a little slow down at the stables, day after day, week after week---so I won't be able to say much except to suggest to you the following: In the Israeli press all dimensions of the problems are talked about openly, and I think it is fair to say that the open conversation, in comparison to some polities, represents an ideal of what the press can and should be, as well as public discourse. I agree that there are hard and difficult questions that Israel must finally decide on (the West Bank, etc), but I don't think you can accuse the Israelis of dishonesty about their own situation.

Talking Ass,
I never said I found no value in it!! What I said was that the message is not consistent, and it isn't. Also, you must realize that many Christians avoid the Old Testament and often quite openly say so, as it confuses and upsets them.
O come now, you can do better than that. You surely know very well what I mean. The Koran for example mentions hell and apparently describes it vividly on 1/3 of its pages. Of course the OT is filled with negative stuff. Lots of it and I don't think you need me to present the examples? If you are really ignorant of it than you can't very well be in this discussion. They seem to find values there, and they don't say they are filled with 'terrible stuff'. So, there is a significant percentage of people---dumb people I suppose?---who find tremendous value in something you find no value in, or very little.

Talking Ass,
The ones who need to gird up their loins are the ones who can't face the truth about the Bible and its history, and the big Pussy is you, who are so amazingly defensive about what I have to say that your brain disconnects. It is of course fear, and nothing but fear, which causes such reactions.Pussies. That's what I got to say about it. Sqeamy little complaining pink-toed pussies. Re: Barack Obama, next president of the U.S.?
No, darling. It is that I view it as narrative, as stories that people assembled because at one time they were very relevant, or in that story certain universal truths, or even local truths, were expressed. I see it as a repository of all aspects of the human story and I don't have to edit it, fix it, revise it, judge it from the perspective of the present. And, I see that people NEED their stories. Even if you neutered it, deactivated it, sprinkled some dust on it that caused it to lose all attractive power, still people would clamor for such stories. And, even with all that, something shines through that is beyond all that. It is like it awakens you to a sense of human purpose, and perhaps to some sort of complicity between some force or power in another dimension (?) that is linked with or maybe even cultivates consciousness in us. And, it is not at all that I am threatened by your commentary (we are still stuck where we were---how many months ago now?), I see it as quintessentially shallow. I don't mean that offensively. You seem to want your scripture to be this perfect thing, or to retrofit it according to a New Age model, but in my case, and no matter what, I'll just bet that the same stories---with those giant, larger than life characters, with all the conflicts they live in and need, and the drama of incarnated life---will find a way to repeat itself, an eternal cycle. And the Bible, in the right hands, speaks to all that.
The Bible is so much at the core of who and what we are. Smart people should understand this better.
I think that my core orientation is quite different than yours, and that of course produces this dissonance. I am not really interested in building a bridge to your viewpoint because, if the truth could be told, I think it is you who needs to rise up out of the one you seem so invested in.
Finally, what have you been doing to utterly and permanently destroy that infernal abomination of a nation, Australia? THAT is the real y question here Anna...

In my experience it are without exception always the "sqeamy little complaining pink-toed pussies" who feel the need to give voice to admiration of what is supposed to be "manly" or tough. In some ways they are completely obsessed with it.Talking Ass wrote:Pussies. That's what I got to say about it. Sqeamy little complaining pink-toed pussies. But anyone with girded up loins, anyone with a muscular, vascular, masculine sense - the only sense - of reality, will realize the futility of such talk of "men" as the type of man, the type of power hailed here is the power of a tool, of people actually worshiping the subservience that steers their acts. Subservience to state, priest or womanly love. All revolving around the petty, the small, incredibly low brow peeves, social slights, royal angers; the whims of the spoiled and their spoils.
Here you have the meat of the Bible, naked, fleshy and the reason the stories resonate with so many: the same silliness, disguise, pettiness all lifted up, perfumed with the smell of holiness, of worthiness. It's the dark drab brown of it all that makes the few pearls stand out so clearly I suppose, protected by swats of swamp for the lesser men to sink in. Let them have their moment of hypoxic euphoria!

Well, my dear ass, you have simply reiterated your same old comments, and you have never heard what I've said. You can't, you won't, whatever.
But you needn't accuse others of nonbravery.

It is possible that I have reiterated old comments, and it is also probable that your criticisms of days gone by just didn't make much impression. However, I am aware that many, even for example T Jefferson and numerous of the Framers, were appalled by elements in the Old Testament and some also in the New. Your arguments are pretty much along those lines, if memory serves.

Re: Barack Obama, next president of the U.S.?
I was making a joke, Deebee. Like, if you can't handle the terror and mayhem in the Old Testament and the schizophrenic semi-psychotic despotisms of the Lord of All, you are a 'pink toed pussy'.In my experience it are without exception always the "sqeamy little complaining pink-toed pussies" who feel the need to give voice to admiration of what is supposed to be "manly" or tough. In some ways they are completely obsessed with it.
But what I am actually trying to get at is the dual nature of God, one as the God of Nature and physical matter, and the other God: something beyond it all, something that beckons from far, far away, something that inspires the finest and most loving thoughts and feelings, that points to great idealisms to be realized by men, that proposes alternatives to the madness of material life.
What you have written is like a stiff drink. Better keep it at one, any more and you'll stagger away and start baying at the moon. I am inclined to find in some of the ruthless Bible stories---with all their manly acts---more something to be admired than despised, but of course the times always shift and change and what was 'manly' then is one thing, and now for us another.
It seems to me that the Bible---taken very broadly of course---inspires toward a sense of purpose, a commitment to higher, practicable values, things of that nature. It is certainly true that there are whole orders of people who come under the sway of commands and make that about subservience to state or priest, but it is just as true that some men interpret the message of the Bible is a very different light.
What do you think Anna dearest is proposing---a revision? an editing?
Wow, your reading is radically different from mine. Or maybe you are just stoned out of your brain tonight? (I need a translation of that last paragraph or maybe if it were read by some poetess in a red beret and no bra?) But haven't we sort of touched on this before? There are parts of the Bible that are simply extraordinary, and still highly relevant. The message shines through very brightly with a very strong and masculine zeal (Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, etc). The people who honestly succeed in finding such a spirit and authentically living their values seem a very rare breed. Here you have the meat of the Bible, naked, fleshy and the reason the stories resonate with so many: the same silliness, disguise, pettiness all lifted up, perfumed with the smell of holiness, of worthiness. There is this guy from Holland I know. He touches so many different subjects, he is conversant in so much, he has an opinion in so many areas: but where is his core value? What is the spirit that moves him? What does he serve and live for? (Please, it was just a tag-on question, please don't jump down on me with a Thunderous Voice to answer and level all my city's walls. Took me a while to get 'em built).

Re: Barack Obama, next president of the U.S.?
My point was more that is was something mundane, ordinary for those times at least, dressed up increasingly as time moved on by shifting perception of the material involved - like an old hooker getting more and more make-up as age develops, or as human hands keep massaging it for new audiences...Talking Ass wrote: I am inclined to find in some of the ruthless Bible stories---with all their manly acts---more something to be admired than despised, but of course the times always shift and change and what was 'manly' then is one thing, and now for us another.
What I'm suggesting is that any serious compilation of contemporary material would have achieved exactly the same as it's power is essentially circumstantial. There are many other great works of similar age around but not many achieved cult status in any similar proportion, courtesy of empirical real-politiks.It seems to me that the Bible---taken very broadly of course---inspires toward a sense of purpose, a commitment to higher, practicable values, things of that nature.
Moving on?What do you think Anna dearest is proposing---a revision? an editing?
While it's true there are outstanding parts for big ears, when looking at it pure statistically, considering the large amount it's tucked inside in, it cannot be used to reflect upon the Bible as a whole.
There are many equally brilliant passages in ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek, Indian, Etruscan, Assyrian stuff. Basically everything in that age. The reasons the Old Testament somehow made it to every proverbial hotel room aren't as romantic as you are suggesting. One of those reasons is the Judeo-Christian stupidity to conflate myth with fact and identity. It's a stubborn affliction of monumental proportions.
Nothing! Impossible to believe, I know.He touches so many different subjects, he is conversant in so much, he has an opinion in so many areas: but where is his core value? What is the spirit that moves him? What does he serve and live for?
[it shouldn't be needed to remark my answer captures a lot with simplicity bordering on stupidity]

Happy Days Aren’t Here Again
Since we have learned nothing from past mistakes, we are condemned to repeat them. As if we have not already suffered enough as a consequence of the Bush/Greenspan stimulus, Obama/Bernanke are giving ever-larger doses, which will prove lethal to any recovery. The recession is over; long live the depression!

Surging Into Disaster
President Barack Obama has missed two sterling opportunities to wind down the ugly Afghan morass he inherited from George W. Bush.
First, Obama could have hit the pause button on the war when he first took office. A thorough evaluation should have been done at that time.
Second, during all the heavy-duty strategy meetings over Afghanistan this November. The new president could have announced a cease-fire in the war or sharp reduction of military operations, then called for genuine peace talks under Saudi aegis with Taliban and its nationalist allies.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama called for a major new burst of federal spending Tuesday, perhaps $150 billion or more, aiming to jolt the wobbly economy into a stronger recovery and reduce painfully persistent double-digit unemployment.
