    Legislation, fees, and paperwork for building your own house in most ‘developed’ countries is ludicrous. Imagine snails dickering over the size of the shadows cast by their shells…

    Rammed earth absorbs and radiates heat well (called “high thermal mass”), but doesn’t retain heat well (called “low insulation, or ‘R’ value). This finding comes from a recent CSIRO test of a 200mm thick wall. The concrete jacket with anchors would improve the R value, especially if the wall was 300mm or more (which is a minimum standard in rammed earth walls).
