Google's indexing process is not known to be a very reliable or consistent alternative since they could change the content of their index day by day and also Google spiders often only parts of a forum or site. It's a very incomplete search method for forums and I'd be surprised if everything would be found with it especially when time goes by.

phpBB version 3 has two different search engines available, one of its own (default) and one mysql option that might be more heavy on the server but I'm not sure about the issues. I do know there's under phpBB admin panel section maintenance an option to delete and re-create search indexes. What appears to happen now is that the index is only added to after writing a new post but was not created after importing the old database. Re-indexing might take a while though and slow the board down for a while, perhaps an hour or so.

If I'm reporting old news for Kevin then of course my apologies. It's just that I've played with this myself recently and discovered this behavior too.

Seeing as you don't like aliases and also because I am not too fond of this random one I created for this forum, you could change my username to 'Neil Melnyk' if you please.

You'll need to re-register as that username. We have many powers but the ability to change your name as a user isn't one of them.

Actually, Kevin can do that.

The thread where he announced he could.

It will probably take him a while to get to it, as he is likely to be less available for the next 10 days or so.

Well, yes, he can if he goes into the code and makes changes; it's easier to just register with the new name.

There should be an easy way for admins to change it. phpBB allows members to change their own if that setting is enabled.

If he didn't want to do that, why would he make a post offering to?

Well, I didn't follow your link; I assumed it was in relation to the user issues we had with the change-over. If Kevin wants to do it, good luck to him, but, of course, he won't be back in Australia till after the 17th. It's still easier to create a new username. That will take, like, 5 minutes, tops.

But if he does that then his posts will no longer be associated with his name.

phpBB provides a way without going into the database manually. Any admin should be able to do it in the admin control panel.

My only concern is that if I change your username in your profile that it won't associate all your past posts with the new one. I won't make any changes without knowing that will happen.

You're welcome. I never knew this feature was possible. Thank God for admins ignorant of their real power.

I'm getting it off and on again. At times on connecting to the site, and if I go through, then while clicking just about any link.

Seems to be some database teething problems. I'm sure Kevin is working on it. Apologies for any inconvenience.

This new server sucks. It's the antithesis of Genius. Delays or inability to open windows just about every day for a week. Why are we stuck with this new format?

What was the problem when you posted your messages? Delays? Error messages?
