Sufjan Stevens, a great, great artist hailing from Detroit City, has plans to pen an album for each of the 50 United States (or juxtaposed ones, anyway). He's got Illinois and Michigan under his belt, with California being whispered in rumour.
Here's a sampling from his most recent contribution to the indie rock scene here in the States:

You must hear this:
Another Star
One of the few songs that sends shivers down my spine.
Something that doesn't sound to me like a song, but somehow, is.

Re: Music that moves
Musical taste is a funny thing. I've always had a hard time fitting it into a given psychological profile. I thought that was totally boring. I couldn't get past 2 minutes.
Then, I either like my music vacuous and catchy or non-verbal and complex.

Maybe somewhere there is Another Love Song that's a little more honest about what it's like to be in love.Kevin Solway wrote:Another Star

Re: Music that moves
Speaking of love songs, while I was on the train from Seattle to LA I spoke for an hour with a fellow who was the US tour manager, and later the band manager of Public Image Limited, and who told me some interesting stories about John Lydon and his family. He told me that he filmed the Not a love song video, and appeared in it towards the end.
Small world.
Apparently the only reason he had the job as tour manager is that no-one else from Warner Brothers wanted it. Such was Lydon's reputation.
I think Lydon would be make for an interesting podcast, if it could be made to last more than a few seconds. It would be a challenge.

So would have I
Hard to know what he's saying in the song, but the spirit of his expression is rare and high quality. However deluded the guy is, it's clear in all his songs that he isn't writing about romance, but about the struggle to overcome and find wholeness and spirit.

Who can resist Freddie Mercury and Queen? Well, whoever thinks he can is in serious delusion :) No seriously.
This song and a suitable video are about his disease induced dementia.
I'm going slightly mad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNBWf54RvsI
This one also done shortly before his death.
The show must go on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ADh8Fs3YdU
This is one of their best. With a brooding atmosphere, complex and comprising several musical styles.

Sam Roberts isn't too bad.
And then there is A fall thru the ground
^ Haunting tune, cool vocals, questionable lyrics, and amazing solo
Extreme Ways - I don't normally listen to Moby, but I liked this one.

I like Ben Harper's Faded. Video and lyrics have a point too, for the observant.
Re: Music that moves
Was it all worth it? Knowing he doesn't have long to go, this singer of songs asks himself.

What do you think they might be saying with their "Vitriol" clip?Kevin Solway wrote:A little Aussie music
Everyone finds their peace by saying "fuck you" to the world, in the manner of the born-again Christians?
Perhaps.
On the other hand, they are artists, so they probably don't have a clue what they're trying to say.

Ben Harper's fucking awesome.
As for Vitriol, I think it was created for its own sake.
PS: I know I've mentioned this one several times, but for the benefit of newer members, here's my favourite Harper tune (courtesy of this alternative site, thanks--turn up the speakers):

Re: Music that moves
Yeah, sounds about right. The song's message is very close to: "don't worry, be happy", except 'happy' is replaced by some 'vitriolic' emotion that is a little more intense than mere happiness.Kevin Solway wrote:What do you think they might be saying with their "Vitriol" clip?Kevin Solway wrote:A little Aussie music

I think they probably know what they are saying insofar as they know the song is aimed at a certain minority. I'm pretty sure the verse of the song says "fuck the whole world and what everybody's saying".On the other hand, they are artists, so they probably don't have a clue what they're trying to say.
Jesus stressed that you must hate your father, mother, brothers, sisters....and your own life.
The guys who wrote vitriol aren't taking it that far; they say: fuck the whole world and what everybody's saying.....but get yourself enthusiastic and pumped about it!
I like the sound of the synthesizer they use, but I think the song is too catchy for it's own good.

Re: Music that moves
This guy gets quite passionate, I thought the veins in his neck were going to explode at one point, but many of his concerns are genuine, the song actually reflects the fear revolving around the birth of atomic weapons earlier this century.
