Taking the pill for last 40 years

Post by Tomas »

Taking the pill for last 40 years 'has put women off masculine men'

-snips-

Scientists say the hormones in the oral contraceptive suppress a woman's interest in
masculine men and make boyish men more attractive.

Dr Alexandra Alvergne, of the University of Sheffield, says the Pill could also be altering
the way women pick their mates and could have long-term implications for society.

'There are many obvious benefits of the Pill for women, but there is also the possibility
that the Pill has psychological side-effects that we are only just discovering,'

The links between the Pill and sexual preferences are highlighted in a paper in the
journal Trends in Ecology and Evolution. (many photos)

Medical-Bioethical Elite Seek License to Kill for Body Organs

"If it can be agreed upon that PVS bodies can be regarded as dead," Ghent University (Belgium) philosopher An Ravelingien

At the very least, it should be permitted in cases where the PVS (persistent vegetative state) patient had a living will specifying that their organs be donated should they enter a PVS.

African Cardinals Denounce "Cultural Imperialism"

African Cardinals Denounce "Cultural Imperialism"

-snips-
"There are certain cultural norms that are inherent in Africa," [Cardinal Wilfred Fox] Napier said. "One of them is that sexual activity is for bringing babies into the world. It's not so much for enjoyment."

But he said the "cultural imperialism" imported from the West "is saying 'no, it's for enjoyment, and pregnancy is almost a disease."

"Western populations think that their life is the model for everybody, but it's not the case," [Cardinal Theodore-Adrien] Sarr said. "If they have some ideas, they can put forward these ideas, but these shouldn't be imposed on all the populations of the world."

Stewart David Nozette tried to give (gave) classified information to a person who he believed was an Israeli intelligence officer, the justice department said.
According to an affidavit, Mr Nozette worked at the White House on the National Space Council from 1989 to 1990, where he developed a radar experiment that purportedly discovered water on the moon.

"Strip search' scanner suspended for children at Manchester Airport"

The RapiScan machine being trialled at the airport’s Terminal 2 shows up a clear outline of passengers’ bodies as well as breast enlargements, piercings and false limbs.

Travellers can opt out of the virtual strip search but the airport had planned to let children take part if their parents gave consent.

Manchester Airport managers have had a rethink on allowing under-18s through the scanner after child protection experts warned that they risked breaking the law by creating indecent images of juveniles.

Some counterweight to, uhmm, other weight.

2208, not 2012 is the end of the Mayan calendar
The error was made when the calendar was translated into Greenwich mean time. New research by archaeologists, astronomers and mathematicians has revealed that the calendar was out by two centuries. Which means humanity has another 200 years to ponder the prediction.
Statisticians reject global cooling
You may have seen some news reports on the Internet or heard about it from a provocative new book. Only one problem: It's not true, according to an analysis of the numbers done by several independent statisticians for The Associated Press.

Should nations fly to the moon together?

Post by Tomas »

.

As exploring the heavens becomes more expensive, many experts think it is time for nations
to band together to push humanity to the next threshold of space exploration. (see photos)

Yet before the world embarks on any kind of cosmic Kumbaya ride, a fundamental question looms: Can spacefaring nations really overcome the impediments
that have traditionally inhibited such ventures - national pride, suspicion of shared technology, bureaucratic and cultural differences?

"We have to do it or we won't be doing the grand mission of exploration," says Louis Freedman, executive director of the Planetary Society,
a space-exploration advocacy group in Pasadena, Ca. GO HERE > http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/1026/p25s02-usgn.html

Quote of the week, in the context of the Fort Hood shooting.
Indeed, many of the characteristics attributed to Hasan by acquaintances – withdrawn, unassuming, brooding, socially awkward and never known to have had a girlfriend – have also applied to other mass murderers.

Yeah, and it can be applied as well to mathematicians, autistics, painters, goth kids and seriously disabled people...and so on.

Vanished Persian Army Said Found in Desert

Bones, jewelry and weapons found in Egyptian desert may be the
remains of Cambyses' army that vanished 2,500 years ago.

"We have found the first archaeological evidence of a story reported by the Greek historian Herodotus," Dario Del Bufalo,
a member of the expedition from the University of Lecce, told Discovery News. (see slide show)

Vatican looks to heavens for signs of alien life

Post by Tomas »

Vatican looks to heavens for signs of alien life

"The questions of life's origins and of whether life exists elsewhere in the universe are very suitable and deserve
serious consideration," said the Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, an astronomer and director of the Vatican Observatory.

The Church of Rome's views have shifted radically through the centuries since Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno was
burned at the stake as a heretic in 1600 for speculating, among other ideas, that other worlds could be inhabited.

"Just as there is a multitude of creatures on Earth, there could be other beings, even intelligent ones, created by God.
This does not contradict our faith, because we cannot put limits on God's creative freedom."

It also conducts research at an observatory at the University of Tucson, Arizona.

Obama administration's move to try alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others in New York.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8360018.stm

US Attorney General Eric Holder told a news conference."The Department of Justice will pursue prosecution in federal court of the five individuals accused of conspiring to commit the 9/11 attacks," and "I fully expect to direct prosecutors to seek the death penalty against each of the alleged 9/11 conspirators."

Intelligence memos released earlier this year revealed Khalid Sheikh Mohammed had been subjected to harsh interrogation techniques including water-boarding on multiple occasions since his capture, and at rehearsal hearing at Guantanamo in December 2008 stated that he is ready to plead guilty to all charges against him, confessing being responsible "from A to Z" for the 9/11 attacks.

Debra Burlingame, whose brother was the pilot of the hijacked plane that crashed into the Pentagon, told AP news agency she was sickened by "the prospect of these barbarians being turned into victims by their attorneys" if the trial focused on torture.

Senator Patrick Leahy, who chairs the Judiciary Committee, said the decision demonstrates "to the world that the most powerful nation on earth also trusts its judicial system".

Senator Mitch McConnell described it as "a step backwards for the security of our country" that "puts Americans unnecessarily at risk".

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg - an independent - also backed the move: "It is fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site where so many New Yorkers were murdered."

FDR

Did FDR Let Millions of Americans Starve During the Great Depression?

But what Roosevelt's New Deal brought about was more profit for the capitalists, and GULAG public works for the hungry. To each his own.

Even more worrisome than the thought that millions of people starved to death during the Great Depression and the Government covered it up is the thought that it could/is happening again. There's no shortage of praise for President Obama, who the Left regards as a modern FDR. Added to the communist-admiring czars he surrounds himself with, our current situation might be deja vous all over again.
