Music that moves
Re: Music that moves
What must it have been like when mind rather than paper or machines stored all of cultural knowledge, and song was the means of continuity. One song became the song of all rather than the song of just one voice. What we feel now is a paleolithic echo of those times, probably a bit jumbled when taken out of tradition, jumbled from shared ownership of the song to identifying with, and owning the voice, regardless of the source, the dynamic just under the surface of appreciative applause, that urge to personally own the singing voice as the voice of all. I read that when she was a kid and in the hospital with polio, Joni Mitchell sang songs all the time in a loud voice, convinced that this would keep her alive. She was right! Kept her very much alive and created an entity in which many now share with a sense of ownership.

Re: Music that moves
An elegant spin, Cahoot, and appropriately nostalgic, for music and song are the soundtrack to capital culture now; I think you cite a signature difference in the mythotic past, the mass-mind dreaming of song, story; the meaning of ownership then and now. The fractal pseudo-individualism, and the speed of turnover for music (and celebrity) is the perfect accompaniment and stimulus for the movement of money, the present content of culture itself; a sound that goes along with possession qua possession itself.
I wouldn't touch a Joni Mitchell tune with gloves on. I found her untouchable; didn't even bother . . . .

This recording immediately became the definitive performance of Nessun Dorma, for me.

How amazing that Puccini can reach through time and space to so intimately touch a shared sensibility with conceptual notations, scribbles on paper that communicate non-conceptual sounds.

You guys are killing me softly . . . . but this ol' bohemian still finds Pavarotti at his tingly best in this old hack of an aria:

With Pavarotti, I've always thought, there's nothing left of any note in reserve. He "cracks" each of them as far as they can go; his voice cracks them all open, nothing left.
Dennis, I used to plug in music whilst hiking, biking, too. Am of a completely different mind now:
ambient sound . . . . (better to locate the presence and company of hidden birds . . . :)

Pav nails Puccini.
Moving.
It gladdens me Cahoot that you are of the nature 'attuned to such a fine sensibility'.
In that clip I referred,

the response of the audience,
immediate, unmediated direct experience,
authentic,
Spirit.

except the context of my bike ride has me in city streets,
concrete, bitumen, swooping traffic,
people, en masse, dressed in dark suits, clutching briefcases, as tho' going to a funeral.
'scienceworld'
a bitter harvest in many respects.
'The Lark Ascending', in that context,
alive in the headphones,
a possibility seemingly forgotten.
The darling buds of May.

These two aboriginal songs induce Nessun Dorma like feelings within me, although completely different music.

Russell Morris - Sweet Sweet Love. I rediscovered this only recently – can’t stop going back to it. I must love indulgent reminiscing.
