The Slacker's Bible

Post by Unidian » Wed Apr 28, 2010 4:31 am

This is admittedly a little spammy, so I'm posting it in Worldly Matters and hoping that my status as a long-time GF member (as well as the subject matter) will make up for that. If not, that's fine. Anyway...

Kickstarter is a new method of funding for creative projects. Creators post projects, and backers pledge money to support those projects. There is a specific funding goal, and nobody gets charged until the goal is reached. In other words, if funding does not succeed, nobody pays anything.

So, I started a project. It can be viewed here:

[Link removed, see update below]

If you like the idea and want to help, please consider making a pledge. Remember, you don't get charged unless the full amount amount is raised, so there's no immediate cost. If you can't pledge right now, please consider spreading the word. Throw the link up on your Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, your favorite forums, or whatever you have. That will help.

I've been told I need to do something of this nature for years. Now is the chance for people to show their support. Again, keep in mind that if you make a pledge, you pay nothing unless funding succeeds - but don't rule out the possibility that it just might. You never know. Stranger things have happened.

No abusive replies to this post, please. If you hate the concept, hate me, hate the world, or any combination of the above, feel free to shoot me a PM and we'll have it out there.

Um, why do you need money to sit on your arse and write a book about sitting on your arse?

That said and asked, I hope you get a few patrons. Sorry I can't afford to be one of them.

Unfortunately, as Dan reveals, can't count on a slacker to help a slacker.

You'd have to outline at least a couple of solid reasons why slackism should be encouraged---financed!

What do I get out of it? ;-)

A good conscience!

Also, if you read Nat's essay: "Freedom, Capitalism, and Work" you'll get a rough idea of the philosophy of the book.

Oh God, another tract to read. I'm just getting through a novel though---White Slaves of Lesbo Island, by a Dutch author in fact---it'll take a day or two to get to it.

Hmm, sounds kinky. Two days might be optimistic.

Unidian, if you could write that bible at all, or even part of it, you would already have done it by now in your free time, don't you think? Because one has to love and enjoy such writing and research otherwise it would become an unreadable work of pain. Compare this with how Tom Lutz wrote his admirable: Doing Nothing: A History of Loafers, Loungers, Slackers, and Bums in America.

To wait for $10000 to emerge before writing would subvert the whole notion of being a slacker. It would become just a rather common commercial transaction to create another bunch of payed undesired work under a different guise. Although perhaps you intended to create such self-defeating mind-twister? Or has your own mind become that twisted?

Update:

After realizing that my initial funding goal was wildly optimistic and not achievable, I decided to set a much lower funding goal. On further reflection, I decided I might as well just do another book I've had in mind as well - a shorter and more manageable one. The new project has a far more modest funding goal and is a philosophical-spiritual book. I hope those of you who funded the original project will fund this one, and that others who might be more interested in this new subject matter might decide to back it as well.

New Project Link: "Light & Logic"

Note: For what should be obvious reasons, no questions about the specific content of the book will answered here. If you see something on the page that makes you curious, you'll have to hope funding succeeds so you can read about it - or better yet, take action and help make that happen.
