Along the lines of George Carlin, who paved the way.
According to an interview I watched recently, recorded 6 months before his June '08 death, Carlin felt he did not find his true voice until the early '90s (30 years (!) after turning professional). It would have been around the time of this 1992 HB0 Special, Jammin' in New York.
