The Last Frontier

The Last Frontier

In Alaska, the folks are self-reliant and prefer to take care of things themselves. And they like Sarah Palin.

Palin represents a uniquely American brand of feminism, rooted in the material hardships of frontier life which demanded women not only nourish and raise their children but also do men's work because there was always so much work to be done: clear the trees or help your husband on his fishing boat. It is a feminism that couldn't be more at odds with the relentlessly ideological post-1960s feminism that, paradoxically, presents women as weak and needy creatures, victims of men, who need collectivist boosts from the government in order to hold their own in a male-dominated world. Not surprisingly, Gloria Steinem, the doyenne of 1960s feminism, called Palin a tool of the "patriarchy" who had failed to make "life more fair for women everywhere."

Tomas, are you mentally deficient? Single moms make ends meet any way they can. More power to them. Stop with the burkha nonsense. What's with you? No, wait - I get it, Tomas, you dog. If Palin were exactly the same but with buck teeth, cellulite, thick ankles and acne scars - none of which would be her fault- you wouldn't think twice about trashing her the way you trash everybody else.
They'd be living in Blair House, replete with staff.. Al Gore's kids made do, what's the difference with it being a woman vice president this time. Male chauvanism?
The difference is Al Gore is more educated and and makes an effort to... golly, take an interest in current events?
Like going around saying a drunk driver killed his wife and child? He gets away with that because the driver has passed away, but his daughter said he was cleared of that by the state police. He was a tee-totaler.
What are you talking about?

I do not have a thing against women in politics. I do have a thing about this woman. She's massively unqualified for the job she wants us to give her. Her judgement is faulty. Blatantly so.

Don't you get it, Tomas? She's not urbane. At the very, very least, a president or vice president should be urbane.

Why no answer to my post? Do you or do you not care about how she handled her labor, do you really not see that she is lying at some point, and if you don't care why not?

I think it's beyond the grasp of 90% of the US citizens, and 90% of those citizens and their concerns are beyond her grasp too.

Really, I know many Americans are still really big on that One Nation for God crap, but I totally support secession of states like Alaska and Vermont too for the reasons you mention. I even support secession of the Northern farm provinces in my depth of the pit and I voted for it in the elections.

Actually I can't believe Palin reversed [what appears to be] her initial drive to secede, and goes federal as if Washington somehow could be changed, made into something less federal, hah. That's not gonna happen. I think some Neoconnish intellectuals got a hook in her faith and vanity and converted her as they converted Mccain and Bush with delusions of grandeur of some kind, like history's actors. Cannot explain it otherwise.

Alex, if Palin becomes President, will you start wearing as much make-up as she does?

Yeah, but it is kinky Kelly Jones hair, and his wife and kids too. I was of course making (bad) jokes just to bother Tomas (who may in the end be fucking with all of us). I have a friend who, surpisingly to me, is adamantly opposed to Obama, and I suspect, though he won't say it, it is because of race more than anything else. When I told him I knew where to get a hair kinking device and I'd pick him up one if he wanted, he did not look at me very appreciatingly, and I haven't heard from his since.

Oh, I know, he goes down .. memory lane .. about growing up in the San Francisco area, all the feminists, his mom, at the house yakking up a storm. Heavy fog of pot smoke etc.

The majority of "jews" have dark hair?

My sister is married to a former "jew" with dark hair (but now gray). He left the 'jewish religion' behind when he moved out of his parent's at age-17. He is born/raised in northern New Jersey. He is ethnic Ukrainian/White Russian/Czech. As he puts it, Slavic.

PS - Shah mentioned (truth be told - viciously attacked me) that I had the "hots" for Palin - basically true because I like women with long hair, a sign of independence and a structured lifestyle. A can-do attitude..

You admit it is true? After all the whining?

Oh, and long hair is not a sign of independence, but of a conformist who dares not break paradigms.

A letter from the Palindeceptions.com website:

Everyone should read the New York Times article carefully. It raises questions about McCain's health as well - and of course that impacts Palin.

It is suggested, though can't be proven, that his melanoma in 2000 was actually more serious than reported. This is based on the surgery that was done - surgery recommended for a Class III melanoma, not a Class IIa. The reason this matters is that a Class III has only a 36% ten year survival rate, instead of a 60% for Class IIa. (This is all in the article... read it!)

Anyone really looked at him lately? He's very "twitchy." Compare him to some of the earliest Republican candidate debates or press conferences he gave a year ago. There's plenty of material on YouTube to do so. He's changed. There's something going on. I'm not a doctor, but I went through melanoma with the parent of a friend, and they can get metastases in the brain.

More than maybe any other election in modern history, we are not only electing a president but we are electing a vice president who has the best chance ever of becoming president.

Sarah "Tight Abs" Palin and the First Dude in the White House? It would be laughable if it wasn't so serious and possibly real.

For the henhouse girls..

I've never voted for president or vice president. This, for me, began in 1972 and on.

I'm not voting this year for prez/veep.

However, I may for House Representative (unknown who I will though).

Now and then for the governor, state reps, state senator, county, city etc.

PS - If voting for president were direct election (no electoral college), perhaps I would

How I decide whether I'll vote each election cycle is by coin flip the day of election - really!

Like Dan said, I was never born :-)

There are many people who have voted sporadically, or not at all. This election though has far more meaning for many more people. I met people at the Democratic headquarters recently who explained they were never political until now, and now it meant something to them, and they simply had to act in some way, and they were engaged with gusto. Their concern, therefor, completely trumps your flip of a coin attitude, Tomas.

Obama as president will be able to do very little, and who is really certain what should be done? The only hope here is that millions of people have made an effort to get into the political process, and maybe they will get politicized, and maybe they will be able to influence some policies. I think we can have a little hope, maybe not too much, but only if more thoughtful people have a stake in the matter, and work to express their opinions, to change the atmosphere maybe a little bit.

The forces that will oppose this expression of populism will be vast, though.

It is the contrasts that give meaning to life, the chiaroscuro, and the drama.

Oh Jesus, Alex.

Same shit (not you personally) spouted every four years. Like clockwork.

All these unconscious people "getting involved" for the first time. Just vote Democratic/Republican for "real change".

Biden/Palin are a couple of energizer bunnies, huh?

That's what it took for Iolaus to get involved. Wow!

Sure as the sun rises in the East, you can bet some new bogeyman will be invented, some new crisis to "test" the mettle of the new Oval Office resident.

With a Democratic super-majority in the offing, whoever gets in will be pulled to the left .. all canoes drift downstream with my tax money :-(

PS- If you live in a state with an abundance of Democratic-leaning voters, your vote is wasted. It's the Electoral College baby, that's where the action is .. that's what is keeping McCain in the running and why he's pouring scarce money into those.

Even Bush/Cheney are pulling for their cousin, Obama.

Beginning in 1972 .. the past nine presidential election cycles, I've not pulled the switch for president or vice president (no write-in zilch-o). This time around, probably not.

PS - I'm still in North Dakota, helping out various farmers bringing in the corn crops, we had a hard freeze a couple nights ago. Shouldda been back in Cali at my business, but the girlfriend is running it in my absense.

Suppose I could hang around and go to the polls in Dakota, on the 4th of November to vote for the presidential electors. But then, I wouldn't be able to vote for my state assembly (slave-masters). Class Will Tell

-snip-

While Palin threatens class solidarity, Obama is emollient. The more urbane members of the Hyde Park community are cleverer than their Wasilla counterparts and believe that they have captured Obama for their class--just as Richard Stern persuades himself that the still-radical couple he dines with are merely Unitarians in a hurry. But the man who may be president is cleverer still.
