Chinese Freemasons

The sodality of Freemasonry that evolved out of the European Enlightenment bears no resemblance, other than the name, to another society-one that finds its origins in Southern China. Styling itself in English as The Chinese Freemasons, this body might be better termed the Vast Family (Hongmen) or Fine Public Court (Chee Kong Tong).

Malawi's child tobacco pickers 'being poisoned by nicotine'
Children in Malawi who are forced to work as tobacco pickers are exposed to nicotine poisoning equivalent to smoking 50 cigarettes a day, an investigation has found.

Child labourers as young as five are suffering severe health problems from a daily skin absorption of up to 54 milligrams of dissolved nicotine, according to the international children's organisation Plan.

Malawian tobacco is found in the blend of almost every cigarette smoked in the west. The low-grade, high-nicotine tobacco is often used as a filler by manufacturers, reflecting a long-term global shift in production.

Girl, 10, handcuffed and locked in a cell for six hours
The father of a 10-year-old girl who was arrested, handcuffed and locked in a cell for almost six hours has criticised police for being 'heavy-handed'.

Shannon Blake was apprehended by police and taken to a police station in the back of a van after she slapped a man who shouted at her in a park.

She then went through the ordeal of having a mug shot and finger-prints taken before she was locked in a tiny cell with just a bucket for a toilet.

Police may be issued with new high-power Taser
A new Taser that fires wireless electric shock projectiles up to 30 metres is being considered for use by UK police forces, the Home Office has confirmed.

The eXtended Range Electronic Projectile (XREP), which went on sale in the US last month, attaches itself to its target with a series of barbed electrodes and delivers a 20-second, 500 volt shock.

If the subject tries to grab the device to pull it off, "reflex engagement electrodes" activate to complete a circuit that sends the shock through the subject's body out to their hand.

Child gang hangs boy from tree
A gang of children as young as seven put a rope around a boy's neck and strung him up from a tree, the victim's mother said today.

Bradley McLachlan, seven, was left dangling inches off the ground in a Portsmouth Park after the three attackers reportedly ran off laughing.

He was able to hoist his body upwards before being rescued by an older boy who walked by.

Half of U.S. Army Rape Victims are Men
When Amando Javier's 15-year secret finally became too much to handle alone, he turned to the people he trusted: his therapist, his sister, his wife. They were supportive, but couldn't help.

Late one night, searching the Internet from his home in New Mexico, he stumbled across a woman living 1,500 miles away in Seattle. Her name was Susan Avila Smith, and she specialized in helping veterans raped while serving in the military — people like him

Mexico decriminalizes small-scale drug possession
MEXICO CITY — Mexico decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and heroin on Friday — a move that prosecutors say makes sense even in the midst of the government's grueling battle against drug traffickers.

Prosecutors said the new law sets clear limits that keep Mexico's corruption-prone police from extorting casual users and offers addicts free treatment to keep growing domestic drug use in check.

"This is not legalization, this is regulating the issue and giving citizens greater legal certainty," said Bernardo Espino del Castillo of the attorney general's office.

Londoners offered chance to eat sushi off naked models
Nyotaimori - translated as 'female body presentation' - has been the preserve of the Japanese elite for generations, but now an enterprising British duo has introduced it to London.

Despite the credit crunch-defying price of £250 per head, founder Nigel Carlos said there was a "need in the market for it."

'Queen' Michelle Obama Requires 26 Attendants
No, Michele Obama does not get paid to serve as the First Lady and she doesn’t perform any official duties. But this hasn’t deterred her from hiring an unprecedented number of staffers to cater to her every whim and to satisfy her every request in the midst of the Great Recession. Just think Mary Lincoln was taken to task for purchasing china for the White House during the Civil War. And Mamie Eisenhower had to shell out the salary for her personal secretary.

Government Permission Will Be Required To Travel
Starting this year, Americans will have to get government approval to travel by air. As Privacy Journal revealed last fall, henceforth "Permission Now Needed to Travel Within U.S." Getting a reservation and checking-in for air travel will soon require Transportation Security Administration authorization. That permission is by no means assured: For example, if your name matches a "no-fly" list, even mistakenly, you can be denied the right to a reserve a seat on a flight. If your name is on a "selectee" list, you and your possessions will be searched more thoroughly before you can board. What is going on here?

Poll: Most say Afghanistan war not worth fighting
WASHINGTON — A majority of Americans say the war in Afghanistan is not worth fighting, according to a poll released on the eve of that nation's elections.

An ABC News-Washington Post poll found 51 percent who said the war was not worth fighting, while 47 percent said it was worth it.

Only a quarter in the poll favored sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan while almost twice as many would like to see the number of troops decreased. At the beginning of this year, people were slightly more inclined to say the number of troops should be increased than decreased.

Three years ago the U.S. had about 20,000 troops in Afghanistan. There are expected to be about 68,000 by year's end.

Panning for gold makes a comeback in bad economy
NEW LONDON, N.C. — Ashley Michalak and Nate Neitz are dipping pans of dirt into a long wooden trough on a hot summer day. But these aren't ordinary pans, and it's not ordinary dirt. They're gold pans, and the dirt — they hope — is pay dirt. The two cousins are panning for gold at the Cotton Patch Gold Mine in the heart of the nation's oldest gold-mining country. "It's cool. You never know what you're going to find," says Nate, 12.

Screaming Lord Mandy's nauseating flying circus
The most odious man in politics has been transformed into Westminster's answer to Stephen Fry. The boys in the bubble hang on his every word.

His sins are not only overlooked, but celebrated. He revisits the scene of his crimes, accompanied by a slavering posse of press dupes.

Screaming Lord Mandelson makes jokes about his mortgage fraud. He flaunts his dubious associations with multi-millionaires, for whom he does favours.

Swedish Article Suggesting Israeli Troops Kill Palestinians, Harvest Organs Infuriates Israel
JERUSALEM — Israel and the Swedish Embassy responded furiously Wednesday to a Swedish newspaper article that suggested Israeli troops killed Palestinians and harvested their organs.

The article published Monday in Aftonbladet, Sweden's largest circulation daily, implies a link between those charges and the recent arrest in the U.S. of an American Jew for illicit organ trafficking. Later the reporter told Israel Radio he did not know if the allegations were true

DNA Evidence Can Be Fabricated, Israeli Scientists Show
Scientists in Israel have demonstrated that it is possible to fabricate DNA evidence, undermining the credibility of what has been considered the gold standard of proof in criminal cases.

The scientists fabricated blood and saliva samples containing DNA from a person other than the donor of the blood and saliva. They also showed that if they had access to a DNA profile in a database, they could construct a sample of DNA to match that profile without obtaining any tissue from that person.

Building block of life found in comet trail
The amino acid glycine was found in samples from comet Wild 2 brought back to Earth by the American Stardust probe.

The substance is one of 20 amino acids which join up in chains to create millions of different proteins, the molecules from which all the cells and structures found in living organisms are made.

Although comets are known to carry organic molecules, this is the first time one has been shown to harbour such an important element of life.

Eight suspected hijackers of cargo ship Arctic Sea arrested by Russian authorities
Eight men were in custody after the Russian Navy and Air Force intercepted the Arctic Sea 300 miles (480km) off Cape Verde, a group of islands west of Senegal, Anatoli Serdyukov said. The 15-man crew of the ship were rescued.

The announcement was the first confirmation of reports that the vessel was boarded on July 24, soon after it left a port in Finland carrying a cargo of timber worth $1.3 million (£800,000). The intentions and motive of the gang are still not known.

Dark energy may not actually exist, scientists claim
The concept of dark energy was created by cosmologists to fit Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity into reality after modern space telescopes discovered that the Universe was not behaving as it should.

According to Einstein's work, the speed at which the Universe is expanding following the Big Bang should be slower than it actually is and this unexplained anomaly threatened to turn the whole theory upside down. In order to reconcile this problem the concept of dark energy was invented.

But now Blake Temple and Joel Smoller, mathematicians at the University of California and the University of Michigan, believe they have come up with a whole new set of calculations that allow for all the sums to add up without the need for this controversial substance.
