Social Theory

Post by ZenMuadDib » Wed Nov 28, 2007 2:34 pm

Is social theory merely an attempt to hone old Orwellian techniques of repression and dominations, thus further entrenching the status quo?

I guess I'm "scared" of some kind of flavorless world that we've created and don't even realize it and that we'll come to a point where it will be impossible to get out of that.

We are going thru really big changes. I dont see any way to evaluate the power each of them has either. I see some are synergistic, and others at cross purposes.

But for instance, Marxism, Orwell, Ayn Rand, Nazis, Moslems, Jews, & Christians, and almost all other theorists and utopian models assumed that men would still be in charge. You can forget Big Brother, and think more about Ma Bell. Her way of doing things dont fit any of the proposed social models.

Interesting. What constitutes "flavour" for you and in what sense do you find it lacking in modern society? Also, do you think it's a bit of a problem that your sense of well being is so dependent on the way the world is structured? When I think about that myself I can't help but feel that if it were that way for me I'd be seriously screwed up.

I sincerely don't believe that, as much as each person is an individual, that anyone can be completely separate from their context. That would be the point in creating a better world. Denying that you are a part of this world I would see as problematic. Why would you be screwed up? Well flavor I guess would be spontaneity, or at least the possibility for it, non-routine, and things like that.
