Woolloomoolloo. Used to be working class / convicts, now it's yuppy art gallery land. Happened to a lot of the most interesting, vibrant places in inner Sydney - Glebe, Newtown, Marrickville. They had lots of different cultures, local students and their inventions, cheap food grown by migrant families, weekend flea markets, street reclamations and volunteers. But the lively spirit attracts old, lazy, bored, self-protective culture vultures, who want to stick a schedule and a price tag on it, constrain it into a program, get rid of the dirty reckless youth, clean up the streets, homogenise the furniture, regularise the festivals, sell the houses to other culture vultures, push the prices up.... and the spirit dies. Then the art galleries move in, the boutiques, real estate agents, bland expensive cafes, and even the homeless don't want to live there.
