Some Kind of Virus or Something

Took me several days to get past the bitch but I made it -- with only an 88 IQ. Damn.

Marsha, what kind of anti-virus software are you using, and perhaps more importantly, what browser do you surf with?

Since I changed to Mozilla Firefox I have had no problems at all with Internet nasties.

So far, so good with the Firefox. I was previously using whatever came with MSN.

I have Spybot and Kerio Personal Firewall and Avast Antivirus.

Truthfully, I think my computer is pretty worn out. I have had it for about three years. It gets hard use. Used by multiple teenagers. My dream is to have a computer that I use exclusively.

Thanks for the advice. I am pretty retarded but I am working on it.

Firefox is a vastly better option than anything to do with Microsoft. Using Internet Explorer I continually had problems, but that may have been in part that I didn't bother to turn off certain settings.

I've not heard of "Avast" antivirus. I presume it's ok. I use AVG and it seems adequate. Kerio is a good free firewall. For spyware purposes I would advocate using AdAware SE (which is free) in union with Spybot. But if you're using Firefox I think you'll be far less likely to have any spyware of trojan problems.

Marsha? Have we lost you to another virus, or something of the sort?

Use Firefox. If you're lazy, there is a script that will download and install it for you automatically. Just run this batch file:

From what i have read from your posts you seem more inteligent than that, guess the time is your "handicap", and in the end you get there, because you push past the "fear of failure" "the mental block" and keep at it. Even though your score is not high, arriving at correct answers is what realy matters. My iq is 148 (english iq test :P ) , but my spelling and grammar sux. the iq test for me just reafirms that my mental machinary is faster and more accurate than majority of people, no more, no less, and also tells me that there are "theoreticly" people with much faster and more accurate mental faculties. We are both here for similar reasons i think. The reason that motivates you to rise above your capacity is not as important as is the end result itself. just my thoughts on the matter.
ps. congratulations on your victory :)
It's just a ride.

If you download Ad Aware SE personal edition, a google search should find the relevant links, be sure to also download the VX2 plugin, which will help detect other nasties.

I got a new hard drive installed by a computer boy.

He put on Ad-Aware SE and left Spybot. I check both religiously. I use Mozilla Foxfire as the server. The computer boy installed Zone Alarm as the firewall.

I put on a windows password to ward off teenagers. I shut the whole thing down when I am not using it.

I used to enjoy Limewire but I am leery of installing it again. Yet, my son has it on his computer and has had no problems. I bought his computer at the same time that I bought this one. He has always used Mozilla Firefox as his server. He does not run an adware program. He has a firewall of some kind.

He is the sole user of his computer and he has never had a problem.

Any other suggestions?

An exhaustive and ongoing "war-waging" checklist for internet security can be found at Eric Howes' website:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/main.htm

I found it in a book on PC Repair, and have used quite a few hints. Incidentally, it suggests you don't publicise the methods you use for internet security.

Thanks, Kelly. I will have a look. I never considered the impropriety of stating what security one uses on the internet. But, of course, that makes sense.
