nah, not smarter, just not held back by mental processing. That's my theory anyway.
Our eyes are capable of receiving the information, and our brains of holding it in memory. It's just that most of us can't access it because too much gets in the way; fears and doubts about failing, consciously trying to remember etc.
Speed reading seems to me to be a partial proof of this - we can take stuff in that quickly if we let go of the beliefs and judgements. Consider Kim Peek who was the inspiration for the Rain Man character. If we lack, or could put to one side, the mental shenanigans that usually accompany such tests we could probably outperform the chimp.
All looks very impressive, but saying it makes him smart looks like pop-science to me.
