I consider myself open minded to new ideas and well informed in certain areas, but I'm hesitant to call myself "smart." I feel how intelligent I am isn't something I can - or at least should - decide on my own.

Yes. Other people would apply that adjective to me more often then not so I consider myself "smart". Words only have meaning when they can convey meaning to something else.

it was a simple question. if you don't want to answer it, then don't. smart is defined by society, so adhere to it. if you wish to redefine it, then it is no longer the same word for it bears a new meaning.

clearly this forum does not guide its members to a greater understanding of reality, but instead allows them to stroke their egos whenever they feel like it.

I am smart relatively to all that have lived, and died. I am even smart when sitting chatting to Einstein. I am smart enough to tell Newton where he went wrong. I am smart enough to help Hawking solve the mysteries of the Universe. I am smart enough to collaborate with CERN, and NASA. I am smart enough to add new insights into the brain function for a brain specialist.

To answer OP's question yes I think I am smart. However I don't mean just strict IQ. I have met many people with higher IQ's than mine that did not impress me much. Many of them had math skills and even understood some of the functional knowledge presented in philosophy texts. But most of them were victims of groupthinking, did not have a natural drive to understand their surroundings, and had not developed exceptional reasoning skills.

My definition of intelligence requires some kind of edge or drive to understand things personally in a way that is not accountable to others (but the intelligent path leads such a person to listen to opposing arguments and still learn from others).

I nor anyone can judge if I am smart or not.
