Re: Making peace with femininity
Anyway, random things can easily have a predictable result. Generate a random number between 1 and 100. Do that a thousand times. Then average all the random numbers together. The result will be 50, or something quite close. :-)

I do it because it's fun, not because I think anyone necessarily "needs" humor. If you would like to go without it, I suppose that's your choice. But I'm not trying to "cure" Genius Forum by dosing it with silliness as a "medicine" or something. :-P

Re: the more entrenched injustices of the world...
That's interesting how when a thread gets into deeper subject matter Philo is liable to come along and poop in it, and kick it up, like a fat little dog. Well, it interests me that whenever I inject some levity into this poker-faced den of philosophy and lofty navel-gazing, a "deeper than thou...

Re: Genius: arrogance or reality?
I think that people here like to adopt an uncommon definition of "genius" and apply it to themselves in order to bolster a romantic self-image of themselves as solitary, profound, and misunderstood philosopher-sages.

Re: Pain/Pleasure principle
Well, what people actually do has more bearing on my own goals and experiences than a bland psychological fact (people seek good feelings and avoid bad ones), so yes, sort of.Jason wrote:Why is this the more important issue? Because you derive(or hope to derive) pleasure from holding this stance?

Re: Pain/Pleasure principle
This kind of observation is important, but not particularly insightful. Yeah, people like to feel good and dislike feeling bad, so they seek the former and avoid the latter. So what? The more important issue is how people go about doing this, e.g. whether they seek good feelings through murder and n...

Re: Emotion, Attachment & Wisdom
An emotion is just a kind of mental sensation, a feeling. I don't see how a sensation itself can be "delusional." Maybe you mean that emotions are somehow "caused" by delusional beliefs. At the fundamental level, people want to have certain types of experiences and not have certa...

Re: save the world
Do away with greed. That would go a hell of a long way. But to do that, I think, we need to get rid of the idea a supernatural self - i.e. one separate from Nature in some sense. When we view ourselves solely from the perspective that we are existentially, inherently individual , then the underlyin...

But it is intended and felt, or at least it seems to be judging by much of what gets written around here. This thread is a typical example.I'll say it again for you: disrespect does not automatically inhere in actions or ideas. It must be intended and felt.

Well, that seems to presume (or at least imply) that "government" is more or less an ideologically monolithic entity. I don't think it is. True, but neither is private business. There are quite a few nonprofits that specialize in conservation of lands and species, plus for-profit business...

Re: Free Market Environmentalism
I think it is a perilous assumption that private business cares about sustainability. This may be true in some instances and not in others. History surely bares this out. I agree, but I have to admit that many governments also care little for sustainability, for example the Bush admin's approval of...
