Re: Religious language

guest_of_logic: True randomness conflicts with true determinism, and it's my understanding that you subscribe to true determinism. Kevin: Not when you understand "random" to mean "unpredictable", in which case "truly random" means "truly unpredictable". Thing...

Re: Religious language

guest_of_logic: Kevin, you start off by saying that maestro's explanation can be easily refuted, and then completely and utterly fail to do so Kevin: Did I not clearly explain that since we cannot know the current state of the system it follows that we cannot say that it does not fully determine th...

Re: Religious language

Perhaps we need to define exactly what we mean by "determinism" and "indeterminism". It could be that we are talking at cross-purposes here. What is your exact conception of "completely deterministic causality"? To me it means that one state of the universe completely ...

Re: Exploring omniscience

Thank you, David, for responding - I had almost come to the conclusion that no one would care to engage in this thread. I suppose that omniscience in the sense that I'm painting it is "magical" from the perspective of our current scientific understanding of the way that the universe works....

Re: Religious language

Causality is an article of faith is it not? Indeed it is. Not at all. OK then, how do you like this rephrasing?: "That completely deterministic causality is the sole underpinning of the universe is an article of faith." maestro: How do you establish that the past fully fixes the future? D...

maestro wrote:Thanks guest_of_logic, you have perfectly well understood what I was talking about, which seems to have escaped Quinn and Solway completely.
Quinn and Solway are men of faith, invested in their perspective. It's their duty to God (the Totality) to wear blinkers.

Re: Religious language

maestro: It is non-causal in the sense that the present state of the universe is not sufficient to determine the outcome of the random process. The outcome cannot be known until it is revealed. Great explanation, maestro, and one that can't really be refuted (at least it hasn't been in this thread)...

Re: Religious language

Causality is an article of faith is it not? Indeed it is. maestro: How do you establish that the past fully fixes the future? David: What else could fix the future? For a start there's the problem that we can never know definitively that the past and future actually existed and will exist, respecti...

Exploring omniscience

It is widely recognised that the concept of omnipotence suffers from philosophical problems, as are exemplified in the following two questions: "Can an omnipotent being create a rock which is too heavy for that being to lift?" "Can an omnipotent being create a square circle?" I h...

Re: FOOTHOLDS

the whole evolutionary paradigm is nonsense Can you explain why you believe this? In my view, the duality, the yin-yang, reaches to almost the highest tier of reality. Our entire universe/world is built upon the positive negative, or masculine feminine forces. I suppose that you could conceptualise...

Re: FOOTHOLDS

guest_of_logic, thanks for your thoughts, but we cannot speak sanely together until you cease imagining me at your back, calling you names, Pye this, Pye that, etc. OK. It was meant to be an indication that I'm trying to consider where you're coming from, but I'll drop it if it's unhelpful. Men-are...

Re: FOOTHOLDS

And speaking of resentment, it is an odd inconsistency that in a forum exalting masculinity they so often speak resentfully, even wistfully, of the very life of women they supposedly abhor. And by the desire to kill woman, they negate their own masculinity utterly. For in nature, the masculine exis...

Re: FOOTHOLDS

Anna, Congratulations on a wonderful post. Refreshing, insightful and honest. I'm telling you Pye, you are in a losing battle, a no-win, a foolishness and a waste of your time and your life, if you doggedly pursue this fantasy. I never say that individual people cannot go outside the curve, but men ...
