Re: Flash? Friends/Foes?
I don't see any reason for keeping the friends/foes categories. Can it please be removed? - If you don't see a reason for it, how about you just don't use it. The foes category I find to be one of the best things about the new system. The friends I haven't figured out. I marked a couple people as f...

Why we Resist Science
Resistence to science, article Stem cells, global warming, evolution, vaccination - why do some scientific ideas push political and societal hot buttons? Proving that scientists can study practically anything, a pair of psychologists considered "resistance to science" as a subject in its ...

Lithium will destroy your kidneys. If it gets to a toxic level (which is actually relatively easy and has been known to happen simply by going from sea level up to a ski resort because it is affected by altitude) it can do all sorts of fun things from causing seizures to Parkinsons like symptoms.

Yep, I always read the adverse reactions, side effect information, and even online research. However, a 1% chance of a bad reaction compared to even as low as 50% chance of not hallucinating. Trade off is worth it. Simple fact is that I would either be dead or in an institution somewhere without the...

Re: Prozac and other SSRIs
Yeah, Iolaus - I'm not on any now, though my doctor tries to put me on one every time I see him. Now he claims they're doing other things "this will help you sleep (ohbtw, it's also an antidepressant...)" "uhm No." Anyway, as far as adults are concerned, I'd rather have overpresc...

Re: Anna Moore looks at the history of Prozac
It has been my experience that SSRIs are way overprescribed. Every doctor I've gone to since I was 11 has put me on them and every single time I wind up suicidal or so depressed I stop leaving my room, yet none of them listen to me when I refuse. My current doctor has put me on three of them, includ...

I don't know much about it, Katy. We only briefly went over it. I wasn't aware it failed. What did you mean that the revolutionaries lost control? Essentially (and I'm working off of 10 year old information without relooking it up) Robespierre became the leader, but then became a more-brutal dictat...

how hard it must have gotten pounded into my head that revolution will never work! Yeah, that American Revolution was a real bust, wasn't it? Umm, when did we get back under the control of Great Britain? I think I missed that part... :p . Yeah, the Russian revolution worked, too. And so did a lot o...

1500 would be the 15th century, 1501 would be the 16th century. 11th century would be the 1000's. Indeed. I was thinking 1500 because that's the start date for the required history class here... I was actually more surprised by the date you gave. What part of the country did you get history in? Atl...

In the other thread, it was mentioned that people would be surprised to learn Australia is larger than Texas. That didn't surprise me, but what did surprise me was that the US (minus Alaska and Hawaii) is just about the same size as Australia. Their smallest state is the size of Virginia, while the ...

You really think that those things are not “exported†in the manner Dan implies? Wow. You must be joking. I am not talking about popculture. I'm specifically talking about what do teachers say to 5 year olds. Out loud. Probably never really reproduced consciously because they're repeating what ...

Re: Emotions (aka bringing Dan home)
Kind of an aside - but I don't think emotions are purely mental, either. According to Malcom Gladwell , smiling can actually make you happy rather than smiling because you are happy. People instructed to sit and smile actually rate themselves as happier at the end of the time period. Myself, I have ...

Re: What's in a face?
I used to do some substitute teaching with 12-13 year olds... believe me, you can tell by their faces and posture who is or isn't paying attention. Primarily, you have to look at the corner of their eyes because people who are paying attention will use those muscles. Another thing to look at is the ...

There are still things and methods to the way things are taught in all of our schools that can't be exported, and those years are vital for how people are going to wind up. I have absolutely no idea what this means. Can you clarify what you mean, please? . It means that there is a curriculum that i...

Well, yeah, America's foreign policy is fubar. And personally, I believe that others have the right to question and criticize that because it affects them. That's different than internal affairs though - especially the assumptions Kelly makes as to the psychology of individuals here. I don't think a...

Re: Emotions (aka bringing Dan home)
All emotions (and in fact everything that takes place in the brain) are caused by brain chemistry. The fact that some people's brains fire wrong and cause depression, PTSD or whatever else doesn't affect that. All things have a cause and in the case of emotions, whether disordered or not, one of tho...
