Re: The world is a hard drive (sort of)

As far as I understand it, there is no such thing as a higher reality, just the challenge of understanding reality's nature The analogy of the ones and zeros having no meaning until interpreted being analogous to our reality holds some merit, because our perception depends on our brain doing interpr...

Re: Mad ravings on the implications of cause and effect

Avolith, Yet David Quinn argued in one of his recent posts that heavily and continuously contemplating these concepts would eventually bring about real understanding. Do you disagree there? David offers many written points about undertaking the spiritial path. I do not want to contradict any at thi...

Re: Mad ravings on the implications of cause and effect

Should I take this to mean that, if I am experiencing a cloud, I then would (causally) not be experiencing its backdrop? Can you experience "the backdrop" though? In this metaphor, it's the atmosphere hiding the full light of the sun in various shifting, deceptive ways. The whole experience of huma...

Re: Mad ravings on the implications of cause and effect

This is surely contending for the St. Jacob award for tidy, tight prose presentations containing pithy reduced phrasings, right? Yes, and the interesting thing is that it is done; that it felt needful to do it ; that is offers a satisfaction or serves (what I can only see) as an imagined function i...

Re: Mad ravings on the implications of cause and effect

If awareness is not outside of causality, then there must also be non-awareness as a contrast for it to exist. How can I discern awareness without being aware of non-awareness? What are we really? Causality itself? Wouldn't it be more like being aware of this because you remain unaware of that? Lik...

Re: Mad ravings on the implications of cause and effect

You say the infinite is the 'root cause', but it must be outside of causality, right? (Which if true would also still be puzzling to me.) Did you use the word 'cause' on purpose or loosely? If it's subject to causality, then something must have also caused the infinite and so on.... Maybe my mistak...

Re: Mad ravings on the implications of cause and effect

Masterful exposition! Dump David and follow Eric! But ... To the beginner, the pursuit of enlightenment is the goal to enter a new place, a heaven sometimes called 'Nibbana', which is the promise of a permanent escape from suffering. But to the Sage, suffering and happiness are part of a cycle and ...

Hello Avolith, A brave attempt to rescue this Forum from the inexorable pull of the black hole of Trump's Twitter account! Re: To compare is to judge?

But I do believe quite strongly that wisdom in some person ultimately can't be pinned down, and the only way to really know it is to experience it for yourself. I can see that you genuinely believe that there is something seriously immoral happening here, but it's just not so. Wisdom being *pinned ...

Re: To compare is to judge?

Wisdom is not something that can be isolated and pinned down. Its precisely this urge of the human mind that needs to be lessened to become wise. I'm sure you will perceive this as a cheap answer, but it's still true and this nature of wisdom causes the kinds of misunderstandings constantly happeni...

Re: To compare is to judge?

You may not like or appreciate what I say and how I communicate. Your right of course. But I challenge you -- free of any irony -- to isolate and describe the wisdom that you perceive. Do this independently of how I communicate and what I say. Do it in defense of that wisdom. Ask the others who kno...

It may seem mysterious to you, but you would find it rather straight forward if you were capable of seeing yourself. Ask the others who know you if they find my comment mysterious.

Re: To compare is to judge?

The fundamental problem here is that that you don't see that the wisdom here is the real deal. (Would you please use proper punctuation? I had to add a period and an apostrophe.) I understand why you think that. The fundamental problem here is that that you dont see that the wisdom here is the real deal. Critical thinking is always warranted of course

Re: To compare is to judge?

Avolith: Why is it that a comparison necessarily is also a judgement? Eg I can imagine comparing some objects' sizes without making a judgment as to which size is better?
