Re: Can people change?

People with exceptional intelligence (a.k.a. genius) and people with average intelligence all have the same innate abilities. Except one group develops their intelligence and the other does not. That's the difference. Doubt it. I don't doubt humans are intelligent but freaks are freaks. I'm on the ...

Re: Can people change?

I am working hard towards going from being a person of average intelligence to becoming a genius. That is the kind of change I had in mind. I strongly believe that with that kind of change possible the world would be a much better place. Specifically I would like to be a genius at learning. For if y...

Re: Can people change?

I've been busily reading Thus Spoke Zarathustra but I stopped reading after 76 pages. Some of it does make sense (good sign!) but a lot of it doesn't. I like the story parts but the philsophy I'm not sure that I understand or agree with. Not agreeing with someone like Neitzsche probably means I don'...

Re: Can people change?

Hey there, I'm back. Originally I was planning to come back here after a year of serious study and dazzle you all with my brilliance but things didn't work out as I had hoped they would. Learning again, after many years of mental laziness, is harder than I thought it would be. Nonetheless, little by...

I bought the book "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" by Friedrich Nietzsche. Have any of you read it? What did you think of it?

Blair wrote:When you get into a car do you not choose that you will never be in an accident?
Well, you can choose to be careful while driving. That will increase the possibility of you never getting in an accident.

Edit: sure, some accidents can't be avoided, but some can.

Re: Can people change?

Blair, We make choices all the time. Examples: when you wake up in the morning do you not choose what you're going to do next? When you go into the kitchen do you not choose what you're going to eat? When you go to school have you not chosen what subjects you're going to be learning? Etc etc etc.

Re: Can people change?

Kant wrote an essay on enlightenment, but it's hardly a consensus opinion. Michel Foucault famously replied, but I don't particularly enjoy reading Foucault. Thanks. I'll definitely read those. Neither of those philosophers mean what Buddhists mean. What more, not all Buddhists agree on what the Bu...

Re: Can people change?

There's freewill AND there's casualty. Freewill: the ability to make choices. Causality: everything is caused. The two, to me, are compatible with one another and can co-exist in the same world. That's just my take on it. Feel free to correct me. By the way, why did/do you think I'm a troll? No matt...

Re: Can people change?

You can study philosophy and never become enlightened, just as you can become enlightened and never study philosophy. Making enlightenment the purpose of studying philosophy might disappoint you, if it comes down to a choice between one or the other. Okay, I see. What is enlightenment in the genera...

Re: Can people change?

The original (still unanswered) question of this thread is: can people change? I mentioned that life can change people. But does it really? What examples have you seen of this change? Personally, I think it's possible that an esteemed professor or Nobel Prize winner can become a homeless person on t...

Re: Can people change?

At some time you might have to choose between enlightenment and philosophy. What do you mean? I'd like to be both enlightened and to study philosophy. To me, enlightenment would allow me to better understand things like philosophy etc. I see a wall and it's white. I see a white mattress. Although t...

Re: Can people change?

To me enlightenment is the whole purpose of studying philosophy and engaging oneself in philosophical thought. I see it as the end result or a destination. But I'd also like to think there is much progress to be made once someone actually becomes enlightened. One journey is over and another begins. ...

Re: Can people change?

Q: What is an absolute truth? A: Something true in all worlds. Q: Is me sitting at my computer typing this message an absolute truth, why or why not? A: It could be, but I can't verify it, which makes it questionable. So far so good? How would you answer the above questions? NOTE: I'll be away from ...

Re: Can people change?

If this is what you really want to do, then you should just do it. It's not hard to memorize a book. Lots of books have been handed down through oral recitation like the Bible, the Odyssey, and the Iliad. Good to know. Yeah, all my work finally paid off a little bit and made me happy. But happiness...

Re: Can people change?

Ask yourself the question, why do humans breed? If you can give yourself the answer to that question, without emotion or attachment to any aspect of existence, you are enlightened. I answered it without emotion and without attachment (I think). However, a psychopath probably would answer it in the ...

If enlightenment is consciousness without delusion then according to that definition I think I might be enlightened.

Question for ya: how does one know whether they really are enlightened or not?

Re: Can people change?

Could someone who isn't mentally challenged to begin with become mentally challenged because they decided to develop a special ability like eidetic memory (if that's possible) or learning dozens upon dozens of languag...

I wasn't talking about people like Kim Peak. I was talking about people exactly like the Will Hunting character, no less. I believe there are people like this in the real world whom (am I using "whom" properly?) aren't a savant or mentally challenged. Possible?

Jumping into a new field of knowledge is very confusing at first, so don't let it get to you. Yeah, I know. Re: Can people change?

My IQ is somewhere around 147-149, I'd have to ask a buddy in the school system to check out my tests but it doesn't matter in the long run. I, too, have taken tests thereafter, the Army in 1970 tested me and it came back something around 155 but it proves nothing in the long run of things because ...

Re: Can people change?

I start my quest to become an enlightened genius on the 1st day of the New Year (2012). Until then, I'll plan how I'm going to accomplish this goal (or these goals) by gathering interesting books, reading up on how to learn more effectively, coming on here and getting advice from people smarter than...
