Re: Plato: On Truth and Falsehood ( Texts: Phaedrus)

Try this Mel, and pleeease don't accuse me of being a catholic! Subjective relativism ( which is pretty strong in Genius Forum ) is closer to existentialism than Platonism e.g.

' when you step off a cliff...'

Re: Plato: On Truth and Falsehood ( Texts: Phaedrus)

H, I don't think your generalizations cut it mate. Plato's 'Theory of Forms' is quite esoteric and difficult to grasp. You can't just dismiss it with a few one liners. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with a lot of his conclusions, but reading his work is an 'illuminating experience' more akin to p...

Re: the great HOAX of 'Evolution'

Faust, instead of frothing at the mouth, try reading the evidence dahh? After all, isn't that what seperates us from the beasts - our capacity to assess and reason? You might agree. You might not. You might even learn something! The points I outlined above are where the PROOFS of my argument lie. If...

Re: The limits of language?

I don't think we see everything in its entirety. Color, for example, is a function of light and biology—which means that no two people see color exactly the same. It also means that reproduced color can be described, defined, and modeled through a variety of mathematical and visual lenses called c...

Re: The limits of language?

I agree with hades, words are limiting. When we 'think' about a beautiful women, we may be thinking without words. So, what is it that thinks? What is the nature of our imagination? It seems We cannot know something fully by using words or our imagination to describe it. When you apply this notion t...

Boondoggle... that's rich...'lazy fools, cowards'...that's even richer! What is lacking in the context of many of the arguments ( for the want of a better word ) expressed in this forum is EVIDENCE. People just shoot off at the mouth about this and that: personal beliefs, subjective truths, prejudic...

Re: Plato: On Truth and Falsehood ( Texts: Phaedrus)

DQ said that Plato reached his belief out of his own 'conception' of the truth, a conception he had already defined for himself. Well, that's the whole point isn't it? DQs sums it up in a nutshell ( lets give him a little clap) And therein lies the paradox: Plato has his truth, you have your truth, ...

Re: the great HOAX of 'Evolution'

Faust, Yawn...Evolution = adaptation. End of story...In relation to the West and concerning one aspect: the evolutionary processes at work in the structure and function of human society...its sooo obvious, I don't think there's a need for further explanation, but if you want, I will... The problem w...

Re: Plato: On Truth and Falsehood ( Texts: Phaedrus)

Plato also understood that truth, ultimately, cannot be defined, and the moment it is, it would cease to be true. It's not as simple or dogmatic as DQ 'believes'. I refer to the old Greek bloke's story about 'The Cave' - remember? It depends 'where' DQ is in relation to his 'Ideal', which would deter...

Re: God... He who supposedly exists above impossibility.

Webb, I think you've lost the plot mate. My argument, emotional? You must be kidding...your rebuttal is not only based on your own subjective opinions/beliefs/waffle/flights of fantasy /but on 'perhaps', 'maybes' and conjectures that in no way invalidate one word of any argument I've put up ( having...

like a leaf in the wind... if you believe in '............' which is personally meaningful to you, it isn't arbitrary, at least from your point of view. Re: Plato: On Truth and Falsehood ( Texts: Phaedrus)

Yes.... Reality is dense and complex, human beings are frail and ill-equipped to make sense of their lives, and most of us prefer to hide from this truth and live in a fantasy - world rather than accept our frailty. This frailty should not be confused with weakness. As Iris Murdoch wrote in her bril...

Re: God... He who supposedly exists above impossibility.

Then you are left with this: who constructed the construct? Round and round we go...'believe' is the operative word here. You can 'believe' anything, but it doesn't prove a thing...'Consciousness embued with the powers of creation', now that has a ring of truth about it ( which should not be mistake...

Re: God... He who supposedly exists above impossibility.

Webb's argument has more holes in it than a spaghetti strainer! He certainly knows how to tangle himself up. Lets sort him out, by using our, to quote Dostoyevsky, 'earthly Euclidean mind i.e. our ordinary faculty of Reason. When I look at his tapestry of clever statements in the 'light' of this Rea...

Re: Plato: On Truth and Falsehood ( Texts: Phaedrus)

Its obvious that QRS share a tunnel vision when it comes to their own philosophical perspectives and that they have rigged the game before it starts, by not questioning the reality of their pet concepts: 'ultimate' reality and enlightenment. in other words - before any discussion - the existance of ...

Re: Plato: On Truth and Falsehood ( Texts: Phaedrus)

Knowing from 'past lives' still doesn't cut it with me. Doesn't solve the problem. The basic problem being how we can even talk about the Forms using an imperfect ( and unreliable ) form of discourse? For Plato, words were to be used only as a means of creating argument (dialectic) and only as a way...

Re: Plato: On Truth and Falsehood ( Texts: Phaedrus)

Those who demonstrate their ignorance with nasty little 'stabs' do nothing but illucidate how mean and SHALLOW they are. Plato's ideas - of which Boyan knows 'O' - are very related to the nature of ultimate reality, enlightenment, truth, courage (QRS) bla, bla, bla. But instead of considering what t...
