Re: Fun math problem

Easiest way to think of this is simply to tally the money at each step: Manager has $300. Manager gives bellboy $50, so now manager has $250 and bellboy has $50. Bellboy gives customers $30 (out of the $50), so now manager has $250, customers have $30, and bellboy has $20. 250+20+30=300, so there is...

For your presentation and offering of yourself, you employ Jesus-Buddha-Nietzsche and The Wise of the Ages. They are yours , you own them . Re: Religion: Nothing More Than A Comfort

The psychological argument is familiar: religious people just want to be comforted and told what to believe so that they can remove fear and uncertainty from their lives, and they need an external motivation like "heaven" in order to do good deeds. But the problem with using that sort of a...

Re: Simple Proof of the Law of Identity

The Law of Identity is not properly rendered “A = A’, but “A is A”, for to be identical is not the same as to be equivalent. In formal logic, the "=" sign is used to express an identity relation. The logical equivalence sign, on the other hand, looks like an "=" with an extra ho...

Re: The Real Threat to Consciousness

As with most of TSZ, I think Nietzsche was being metaphorical when speaking about warring. I'm not sure you can be very confident in saying that. In Genealogy of Morals Nietzsche speaks with approval of specific nations that had "warrior cultures," such as ancient Greece and Japan. This i...

Some high income folks are "going John Galt"

What does "going John Galt" mean, you ask? It's the practice of deliberately lowering your income so as to avoid the increased taxes on incomes over $250,000 planned by President Obama. "John Galt" is the main character of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, who worked in a menial job in ...

Let's not forget that religion often causes people to reproduce more than they otherwise would, thereby ensuring the existence of more people inclined to be religious.

Sixteen year old boy beats female bus driver in Michigan

NY Daily News story. Note that the other kids are mostly calling the guy "dumb" and telling him that he could go to prison: apparently their first concern is for the practical consequences to the attacker rather than the damage done to the driver. Oh well -- at least a couple of the other...

It seems to me that you're getting less innocent, in that you're finding most people are pretty shallow as thinkers, even if they sometimes show a passing interesting in philosophical questions.

Re: Karl Marx: Philosopher or social scientist?

Also another misconception is that Marx wanted to 'change' a society - he never suggested this as such. His theories pointed to this change as inevitable, through various processes in consciousness and economical realities simultaneously. To him this was how the world worked, all matter, all spirit...

1. What's the deal with all the 1st world countries, especially the ones with the "highest quality of life" ratings, being very feminist countries? Higher technology makes child labor unnecessary. This means that it's no longer profitable in economic terms to have kids -- in fact it often...

For Marx, "spiritual views" are merely a result of economic and social conditions. "It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but, on the contrary, their social existence that determines their consciousness." Since he thinks that philosophies are merely ...

Interesting topic. Anosognosia is a fascinating phenomenon, and could perhaps be used as a wedge for a skeptical argument -- what if people in general are not only deficient in reasoning, but unaware of their own deficit?

Re: The indestructibility of Consciousness

Your argument has a hidden premise: that if something is non-physical, it must also be indestructible. Even if we grant the premise that consciousness is not physical, that in itself does not show that it cannot be destroyed, unless you can also prove that non-physical things are indestructible.

Re: Does one have to be talented in order to be a pro athlete?

The ability to persevere through difficulties is also a talent, I think. So I would say, "Yes." Also, certain physical abilities (like quickness and endurance) are determined by the proportion of slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscle fibers you're born with, which is mostly genetic. A person ...
