Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
At least, I sure hope you're not going to argue that every reflection is necessarily an assertion.

Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
Marx: My dialectic method is not only different from the Hegelian, but is its direct opposite. To Hegel, the life process of the human brain, i.e., the process of thinking, which, under the name of “the Idea,” he even transforms into an independent subject, is the demiurgos of the real world, and t...

Re: Talking to the wall is not Genius
So, your definition of "real" is (arbitrarily) absolute existence - sort of like...absolute philosophy?
What's your definition of existence?

Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
Poor Rod. And he just wanted to develop his metaphysic! ;-) (You just have to keep ploughing on here Rod; this is par-for-the-course). Perhaps you misunderstand. The general 'claim' is that it far outweighs the insights and value of whatever other tools one can use. That doing so leads one to recog...

Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
For Marx, the "thesis/antithesis" constitute dialectical contradictions which lead to (as some have expressed) a "synthesis". Marx himself never put it this way. Rather, he expressed this movement of men and their relations between each other and with nature to be a "materia...

Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
I do not and indeed cannot exclude 'Hegel on his feet' as Leyla said, pretty cleverly. It would be folly to exclude a major idea-force (Marx) that has moulded and continues to mould our human world. I'd love to take credit for that one, but unfortunately it's attributable only to Marx in response t...

Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
Leyla. Here it is: thesis = capitalism, antithesis = socialism, synthesis = capitalism--socialism. When you know the details of the synthesis, you know the first rationalised absolute Truth in history and most importantly its logic. Now you can begin to do absolute metaphysics. "First"? I...

Re: Talking to the wall is not Genius
Defining "illusory" as both real and non-real can be acceptable when the real part is the fact of causality but not any fact of a raised object. An illusion is by definition both real and non-real. Your literacy problems have nothing to do with the truth or falsity of a statement, notwith...

Case in point:L: Things are real in the sense that they certainly do exist, but they aren't real in the sense that they do not inherently exist.

Excellent.
So, we are agreed:
Things are real in the sense that they certainly do exist, but they aren't real in the sense that they do not inherently exist.

Would it be accurate then to sum up your metaphysic as follows: capitalism=thesis/socialism=antithesis political economy=synthesis/absolute philosophy?

Re: Talking to the wall is not Genius
It would make better sense to say that the realness of things are fleeting, and that things are "no longer real" when their dualistic appearance has no consciousness to act upon. I think then too, it would make better sense to say things are both real and non-real, rather than the realnes...

Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
Likewise, Rod.
And, sure! I'd most definitely go with master/slave in Hegelian or, putting Hegel on his feet, capital/labour in Marxian.
What you propose then as synthesis proper would be Marx's "end of history" and a whole new dialectic.

Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
I certainly found your post thoughtful, and interesting; especially the angle of an historical synthesis as "absolute philosophy". You've got my thumbs up. Absolute philosophies are syntheses. However, when presented for public criticism they must be viewed as a thesis so that the full imp...

Re: Talking to the wall is not Genius
I'm game to continue if you don't mind my adjustments, but if you're interested, it'd be better to work with the reiteration of my point, [...]: you can't relate existence to the absolute, precisely because it (existence) is relative. So if the absolute is said to be real, then existence must not b...

Re: Talking to the wall is not Genius
Hi, Russell. I believe you've left out a premise to make your argument stick and you would need to explain to me what sort of "evidence" I need to review before "it" clicks if you think I'm wrong. Your argument, paraphrased, with the missing premise in bold: 1. Existence is causa...

Especially since what follows from your premises in this discussion is simply that Diebert has no "conscious awareness" of rocks.

Re: Talking to the wall is not Genius
The question was that of rockness (identification) and rock (object).
Diebert emphatically denied the existence of rockness, whilst you posit the sameness of identification and object in defence of what you suppose to be "Diebert's premise".
Please explain how you manage that.

Re: Explicit Absolute Truths
What is an "absolute thesis"?Conventional thinkers will think that an absolute thesis without proof is next to a failure. Ironically, proof would disprove Truth.

It'd be a lot more efficient, for one thing. For example, you wouldn't have to keep dealing with what you think jupiviv thinks Diebert's implying.

Why don't you just speak for yourself? What I'm trying to do is bridge the gap between what jupiviv thinks Diebert is implying and what we've actually been trying to explain to jupiviv.

Re: Talking to the wall is not Genius
Russell: Let’s take one of those hollow rubber balls and, for the purposes of illustration, cut it in half so we have two equal spherical caps and place one of them on a table plane side down. Let’s then say the table doesn’t exist. In fact, nothing except that spherical cap exists and, by way of a...

Re: Talking to the wall is not Genius
[cringe] Wake up and smell the roses, Russell! What Diebert is trying to pass off as ultimate reality is wholly inconsistent with this: An object is only what it is identified to be. Any inferences about that object, including its function, what it's made of, its past, etc., is part of the identific...

Here's a "real appearance" for the no-things-exist crowd: whilst Diebert thinks he's a torch bearer, in reality he's janitor who treasures above all his own mess!
