Re: The Metaphysical Dream of the World

Haven't we been here before? And by we, I mean either Dan or David having this exact conversation with Alex? It's almost become an annual event at this point it seems to me. I predict a few more pages of back and forth, Alex will get upset umpteen times, and it'll end in his announcement of a tempor...

Re: The Metaphysical Dream of the World

I think it was that 'moralising slut' Madonna in her role as Abbie, a woman who decides to have a baby with her gay best friend, in the film The Next Best Thing (2000) directed by John Schlesinger. Five years after the kid was born, Abbie wants to shack up with some hetero dude and take Sam, the kid...

Re: Wisdom of the Infinite Regress

Robert, you also object that WLC does not define "the universe", whereas it seems to me perfectly obvious, since he includes scientific arguments, that he means the term in the same way that a scientist means the term when proposing a Big Bang. I think he would agree with you that this is...

Re: Wisdom of the Infinite Regress

As has been said before, trying to divide what isn't possible to divide only leads to confusion. Since Craig fails to define what he means by universe, or at the very least gives a definition that satisfies the initial criteria of his own argument (but is still short of the whole story), he glides o...

Re: The Sexes

Well I think we can conclude 1 of 2 things. Either you all are wrong which is why I don't get what you're saying about some things or 2 I'm completely stupid for not getting it. I'm open to the possibility of both. How would you know if a person is wrong if you don't get what they're saying? You'd ...

Re: The Sexes

When you call this a "feminine activity" does that mean that you're validating Quinn's stereotype of "woman"? It's a "feminine activity" in the sense that there's an inherent irrationality to being a sexist male supremacist, and what is irrational cannot be called a co...

Re: The Sexes

Seems like a cheap gimmick that would attract sexists and male supremacists. Superficially, yes, it may seem that way. Such people however are themselves superficial, and almost by definition I'd suggest. A sexist male supremacist isn't really interested in what's true, but only what's perceived to...

Re: The Sexes

In a broad sense, the feminine represents all that is material, yet since all that is material is ultimately illusory, what we are faced with is how to reconcile this non trivial fact with the equally non trivial fact of our everyday existence. The masculine, again in a broad sense, represents the w...

Re: Christian Conversation. Pearls to swine?

I've reached a point where any further attempt to discuss things at the level I'd prefer, meaning coolly and rationally, has now past and so I agree that is preferable just leave things as they are for the foreseeable future. That point was reached when this most recent discussion ended with Andrew ...

The acrobatics are frustrating, and I can't help thinking that's probably more a result of his accommodating me in my questions since I'm his brother and through his respect for me as such. Otherwise, he'd probably never waste his time on some internet stranger asking him stuff, and possibly just gi...

Re: Christian Conversation. Pearls to swine?

Well, people like Bultmann have done a large part of that, and it is still being carried forward. In a sense it is not fair to hold up the (pointless) conversations with a Fundie who remains shackled in a graveyard of indefensible stories. Thanks for the Bultmann reference Alex, that does make sens...

Christian Conversation. Pearls to swine?

Now and again, my born again Christian brother and I have these loose informal email conversations on religion, spirituality and philosophy. These exchanges took place a few months back, and whilst I was reading through them again the other day I thought they may be passably interesting to some, so ...

Re: Setting approval for first post to avoid visible spam

Ah right, I get it now, I thought Laird meant to allow for only one post to be actually publically posted before allowing for subsequent posts.

An admin managing a first post is a good idea. And yes why not, if possible, delegate this admin function to a couple of regular posters here?

Is it possible to make new members await approval by a moderator before posting? I've seen that on other boards, but I don't know if the software used here allows for this.
